Jack Dempsey was one of the most legendary and iconic heavyweight boxers of all time. Born William Harrison Dempsey in 1895 in Manassa, Colorado, he began his career as a miner before discovering his talent for boxing.
Dempsey was known for his incredible punching power, lightning-fast speed, and aggressive fighting style. He quickly became a fan favorite and a force to be reckoned with in the ring. He held the heavyweight title from 1919 to 1926 and was one of the most dominant champions of his era.
One of Dempsey’s most famous fights was his 1921 bout against French boxer Georges Carpentier. The fight drew a crowd of over 80,000 spectators and was the first million-dollar gate in boxing history. Dempsey ultimately won the fight by knockout in the fourth round.
Dempsey was also known for his controversial “long count” victory over Gene Tunney in 1927. Tunney had knocked Dempsey down, but when he went to his corner, the referee delayed the count to remove Dempsey to the neutral corner. This gave Dempsey extra time to recover and he almost knocked Tunney out in the following round, but Tunney held on to win by decision.
Despite his retirement from boxing in 1928, Dempsey remained a popular figure in the sport and went on to have a successful career as a boxing referee and as a restaurant owner. He passed away in 1983 at the age of 87, but his legacy as one of the greatest heavyweight boxers of all time lives on.
